The Lighthouse Keeper (For Flute, Clarinet, Violin, and Cello Quartet)
A fun, challenging quartet piece for flute, clarinet, violin, and cello, The Lighthouse Keeper is fundamentally a dance. The piece contains several contemplative and aggressive moments, but always returns to a Celtic melody in 9/8 that rhythmically grounds it.
Includes pdf file of score (transposed) and parts.
Program Notes:
Once upon a time, there were four young sisters. They spent their days hard at work, tending to their farm and their animals, studying and learning, and creating songs and poetry. However, at the end of the day, the children would gather in their tiny bedroom, and spin stories late into the starry night. As the room glowed warmly in the soft light of a single lamp, they laughed and sang and told tales, fantastical legends of peculiar heroes and comical side characters. But out of the stories emerged one recurring character, who told wild tales of his own: The Lighthouse Keeper. The Lighthouse Keeper, an adventurous, kind-hearted curmudgeon, had many, many adventures, mishaps, and absurd escapades. Over time, he accumulated enough of these adventures to warrant their telling in his own way. Unknowingly humorous, yet hardly a fool, the Lighthouse Keeper manifested his character through the four sisters' depictions of his adventures, and became legendary himself.
This piece is for the fictional Lighthouse Keeper, for the fond memory of those story-laden nights, and for Sarah, Abigail, and Margaret, who made those evenings among my most treasured.
