The piece mirrors the arc of the biblical Samson narrative, with a brash, ambitious opening mimicking Samson's feats of God-given strength, a defeated middle section as he waxes foolish and loses his strength to Delilah, and a last triumphant section as God lends him strength one last time to defeat his captors, bringing down the entire building upon them and himself.
